Located on the southeast coast of Gozo, Hondoq Bay is a sheltered inlet overlooking the neighboring island of Comino. It is close to the village of Qala. A picturesque area, there are saltpans scattered around the bay. Due to constant winds, it is popular with sailors and windsurfers. Summers are hot and dry with cooling sea breezes and temperatures around 27°C, reaching highs in the 30°Cs. There is a little rainfall during the mild winters.
It is a very small white sandy, pebbly beach, around 14m in length. Clear water, and a sandy bottom make it a favorite with swimmers and scuba-divers.
Due to the shelter, the waters are calm even if it is rough in other areas such as Ramla Bay. Winds blow from east to northeast; sailing conditions are great when the west to southwest wind blows. The gentle breeze does not exceed force 4, and intermediate windsurfers can sail across the channel to Comino. Waves are constant, and currents are strong. Board shorts suffice for the peak months, a shorty in early summer and a full wet suit is required in winter.
It is most conveniently accessed by car or taxi. The bus service runs to Qala, from which it is a 2km walk down to the beach. A small kiosk on the beach rents out umbrellas and sunbeds and sells snacks and drinks. There is no equipment rental. Apartments, bed & breakfasts, farmhouses, shops, bars and restaurants are found in Qala. There is a concrete jetty.
Watch out for swimmers and divers especially in summer. There are no guard towers or lifeboats at the moment.
